We waited. We stared at beetles. We photographed stray cats to calibrate our cameras. Our hungry eyes willed far off crows into its figure. As shadows lengthened they contorted branches into its shape. The darkness seemed to ascend, kept at bay only by the overcast sky, which reflected the city’s neon glare. We were in Nightcrawler and in Drive. We would look away and look back again, a silent pact with our quarry to appear when we weren’t looking.

Without warning, without pomp, it was there.
